Mechanical arts competition shows off hard work at 4-H Fair

Dustin Hartmann, 17, was a fan of International Harvester Cub Cadet tractors since his grandfather gave him his first 10 years ago.

Hartmann said he shares the passion of his grandfather for the restoration of tractors, and Friday, he won his fifth title of champion of the competition of the mechanical arts in Carroll County 4-H & FFA just one its restoration projects.

"I'm pretty proud of him," the teenager said of Mount Airy's record. "I look forward to putting something into the fair."

His project this year is a garden tractor Cub Cadet 1961 with a three-digit number series, which Hartmann drawn down to be made in the second week of production of the company tractors.

"I just kind of stumbled on it," said Hartmann, pick it up at a sale in Pennsylvania.

He spent the last 10 months working on it, pulling the pieces about five Cub Cadet others to make a complete song and the work that impressed the judges.

"I am amazed at how many different tractors you used to arrive at a real tractor," said Lee Grant, one of the judges.
