More outdated public housing razed

HAMMOND | demolition of a complex of more obsolete public housing on the south side of the city began Friday to make room for new residential construction there.

This last phase of the ongoing renovation of the depression-era Columbia Center is to replace 65 apartments with 49 duplexes and houses along Chestnut Avenue south of 173rd Street.

"We have been planning these renovations since 2000," said Maria Becerra, Executive Director of the Housing Authority of Hammond. "We knew we were going to have to reinvent ourselves."
